Divers come in all shapes and sizes. The popularity of a sub-category of slimmer, lighter and dressier divers, called “skin divers”, can be traced back to the late 1950s, up to the Quartz Crisis in the 1970s. With the Skindiver, we’ve incorporated key design cues from skin divers of times past into a modern and refined timepiece that’s immediately recognisable as a Venturo.

Sandwich dial, lancette hands, 12-3-6-9 layout and all, Venturo’s Skindiver is an evolution of Gruppo Gamma’s Mk I Divemaster, with marked improvements in refinement, accuracy, luminosity and long-term serviceability. What used to be a chunky diver has evolved into a more versatile tool, with all the characteristics that made skin divers popular.

What is Venturo?

Venturo sits within the Gruppo Gamma watchmaking ecosystem but follows a more understated design direction. Where Gruppo Gamma's best-known models use bold cushion cases and vintage military-diver proportions, Venturo focuses on practical field and travel watches that are easier to wear across work, weekends and outdoor use.

The Field Watch has now reached its third iteration. Field III models refine the idea with a compact stainless-steel case, clear Arabic numerals, strong low-light visibility and modern strap or bracelet options. The result is an everyday mechanical watch rather than a decorative recreation of a historical instrument.

Who is the Venturo Field III for?

The Field III is suited to buyers who want independent-watch character in more moderate dimensions. Its 40 mm diameter and 48.5 mm lug-to-lug length are smaller than current Genesis, Peacemaker and many Vanguard references, making it a logical starting point for slimmer wrists or anyone who prefers a quieter presence.

Choose the standard three-hand model for maximum simplicity. Choose the GMT/date version if you regularly travel, work across time zones or want to follow a second location. Dial colour is primarily a personal decision: black is the most traditional field-watch expression, while grey provides a softer, more contemporary alternative when available.

Japanese automatic movements

The three-hand Field III uses the Seiko Instruments NH38A automatic movement. It displays hours, minutes and seconds without an unused date position, avoiding the “ghost date” found when a date calibre is installed behind a no-date dial. The NH38A runs at 21,600 vibrations per hour and offers approximately 41 hours of power reserve.

GMT/date references use a movement and display configured for additional travel information. Because functions and calibres vary, consult the individual product page for the exact movement, hand-setting procedure and specification rather than assuming every Field III operates identically.

Case, crystal and lume

Current Field III cases use brushed 316L stainless steel, a box-shaped sapphire crystal with anti-reflective treatment, a screw-down crown and solid case back. The fixed smooth bezel keeps the dial opening broad and the design easy to read.

Venturo Field III is one of the relatively few collections in this family to use Swiss Super-LumiNova BGW9, known for its blue glow. Thick luminous application supports strong night-time contrast without making the daylight dial unnecessarily busy.

The 22 mm lug width provides broad replacement-strap choice. Use straps of the correct width and suitable spring bars, and protect the case from slipping tools during changes.

Current models are rated to 200 metres with a screw-down crown. Water resistance depends on seals and correct crown operation, so periodic pressure testing is recommended for frequent water use.
